3 Tips to Combat Employee Burnout in 2025

Employee burnout and feelings of detachment can sweep through an organization like wildfire. It’s important to proactively identify signs of burnout so that you can put out the flames before it tarnishes company culture or erodes employee morale.

Here’s what you need to know about current burnout trends — and three actionable tips that you can implement to reduce employee fatigue in 2025.

The Hard Truth About Employee Burnout

You may think that burnout only impacts a small percentage of the workforce. Unfortunately, the opposite appears to be true. According to Deloitte, 77% of workers report feeling burned out in their current jobs.

Many employees try to push through these feelings until they pass. However, that’s often easier said than done. To make matters worse, employees tend to become disengaged when feeling burnt out.

They aren’t just going through the motions, waiting for things to get better, either. The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) reports that burned-out workers are almost three times more likely to be looking for a new job.

3 Tips to Push Back Against Burnout

Solving the burnout problem requires more than last-minute employee pizza days or generic gifts. Many organizations fall into the quick-fix trap, only to find that their efforts aren’t doing much to undo feelings of burnout.

Keep in mind that employees don’t get burnt out overnight. They aren’t going to bounce back from the detachment tailspin after a single positive event. The good news is that there are some high-impact changes that you can implement now, starting with these three:

1. Offer Personalized Well-Being Programs

Quickly thrown-together pizza parties and other lackluster efforts approach employee well-being like an afterthought. On the other hand, personalized well-being programs show that you genuinely care about your team members and their work-life balance.

For instance, you could offer each employee a $100 monthly stipend, and give them options regarding how to use that extra money. Some eligible use cases may include the following:

  • Gym or fitness club memberships
  • After-school care for kids
  • Doggy daycare
  • Therapy
  • Personal development courses

Once an employee enrolls for an eligible course or service, simply ask them to provide you with proof that they signed up. Then, you can automatically add the stipend to their check. This initiative encourages your team members to take care of themselves and their loved ones by providing them with extra resources.

2. Consider Flexible Schedules or Longer Work Days

Longer work days can seem like a counterproductive solution to burnout. However, the premise behind this strategy is to transition to longer shifts but fewer work days per week.

For instance, you could move from five 8-hour shifts to four 10-hour shifts. This approach isn’t right for every business. However, if it fits your business model, the four 10-hour shift approach has a lot of benefits. For example, your employees will get an extra day off, which can be great for dealing with burnout.

If the four 10-hour shift model doesn’t fit, explore other flexible scheduling options. Giving your team members some say over how and when they work can be great for morale. It can also help break them out of any rut they have fallen into.

3. Gather and Implement Employee Feedback

Before you start making major changes, talk to your team members. Find out who is feeling burned out through anonymous surveys, and ask them for suggestions for fixing the issue. Not all of the suggestions you receive will be realistic. However, many of the requests will likely be reasonable and within your power to change.

Tally up the results and focus on changes that the majority of employees would like to see. Simply listening to your employees and making a few adjustments can do wonders for morale.
